I woke up alone, Kylan’s side of the bed as pristine as it was when I went to sleep.

He never joined me last night.

That should have pleased me, but my lips curled downward instead of upward.

Because I didn’t like seeing you between his legs.

His words had stayed with me throughout the night, carrying over into my dreams. What did they mean? He kept harping on my purpose to serve yet said he disliked it when I did. Another mind game? Kylan seemed to favor them, but he’d sounded so earnest when he had spoken those words.

He claimed to be honest with me.

Truth or a lie?

I couldn’t tell, and I hated him for that. He lived in riddles, constantly requesting one thing while demanding the opposite. I’d lost it last night and given him a piece of my mind.

And he never retaliated.

My behavior would have earned a severe punishment at the university. I’d witnessed death sentences handed out to those who behaved far better than I had last night. Yet, Kylan merely walked away.

Did he have something worse planned today? To make an example of me?

I sat up, my head foggy with too much sleep. Worrying over Kylan and his intentions would drive me insane. Nothing was predictable with that man. Nothing.

A soft knock on the door had me pulling the covers up to conceal my bare chest. I’d slept naked, expecting Kylan to join me. Which, of course, he hadn’t.

My frown curled downward more as Angelica’s head appeared. Her dark eyes met mine, and surprise at seeing her again held me captive in the bed. “K-Kylan isn’t here,” I said, unsure of what she needed. I hadn’t seen her since the incident at his home.

Her lips twitched. “I know. He’s on a business call but asked me to tend to you.”

Uh, and that means…? “Oh, uh, okay,” I mumbled.

She entered with a plate in one hand and shut the door behind her. “Spinach eggs,” she said as she moved closer. “I ate a lot of these growing up, figured you probably did the same.” She set the food on the nightstand and pinched her lips to the side. “Kylan has requested I assist you with your wardrobe. Jace and Darius are expected to arrive within the hour.”

My lips parted. “Oh.” I didn’t know what else to say. Mikael had been the one to guide me around all week, but of course, he couldn’t do that today. Not after what Kylan did to him.

“Yeah, so, uh, you eat that”—she pointed to the plate—“and I’ll go find you a suitable outfit.” She walked away muttering, “Because apparently feeding and dressing up humans is my job now.”

“I can do that on my own,” I offered. “If, I mean, you don’t…” I trailed off, biting my lip as she faced me with a surprised expression. Right. Decorum completely broken. It was bad enough that I constantly challenged Kylan. To speak out of turn to others, to even look them in the eye, broke so many protocols.
